Once on the very brink of extinction buffalo (Bison bison) - known as Tatanka (tȟatȟáŋka) to the Lakota and the Plains Indians - is probably one of the most powerful and noble animals to grace the North American plains. In 2016 the Bison was named the national mammal of the United States.
